ESG & Commercialization: Why Profit Isn't the Enemy of Sustainability
Share
There has been a lot of noise in the market recently. With the arrival of a massive Japanese secondhand chain in Hong Kong, everyone is talking about "Recycling Standards" and the business of used clothes.
It brings up a sensitive topic: Commercialization (商業化).
Is it just a buzzword? Is ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) just a marketing trick for investors? At Greenies, we have been thinking about this a lot. Here is our honest take.
1. The ESG Paradox
Let’s be real: ESG is absolutely a tool for investment. Many companies use "sustainability" as a strategy to grow. But is that inherently bad?
To be honest, without the commercial push of ESG, the general public wouldn't be paying nearly as much attention to environmental issues as they are today. Business interest drives mainstream awareness. Sometimes, we need the "commercial" engine to push the "green" message forward.
2. Greenies is a Business, Too
We believe in transparency. Even as a Social Enterprise, Greenies makes commercial decisions every day. From our curated Brand List to our Commission Rates, we have to balance our mission with survival.
We are not perfect. We have restrictions on what we can accept because we have limited space and manpower. We understand that "Pure Recycling" is hard to sustain without a business model that supports it.
3. The "Japanese Giant" & The Power of Scale
Regarding the new Japanese chain opening stores across Hong Kong: They never claimed to be a charity. They are a business. And in many ways, that is a good thing.
Sustainability needs scale.
A global chain with hundreds of stores can recirculate tens of thousands of garments—far more than a small shop ever could. Even if their motivation is profit, the result is that fewer clothes end up in landfills. That is a win for the planet.
The Big Picture
We shouldn't fear commercialization; we should hope it succeeds. The more profitable the secondhand market becomes, the more companies will enter the space, and the more "normal" wearing used clothes will become.
Whether it is a small social enterprise like us or a massive global chain, we are all working towards the same goal: a more circular fashion industry. Let’s encourage each other to do better.
